A theoretical background for the study of P solubility behavior in calcareous soils has been developed. The mean activity of dicalcium phosphate is used to express P solubility. Calculation of this function corrects for differences in the pH values, Ca concentrations, and ionic strengths which are encountered when a number of soil solutions are compared. The validity of this approach is based on the observation that the ion product aCa ++ × aHPO 4 = in various solutions in equilibrium with a given soil remains constant over a range of values of pH, Ca concentration, and ionic strength.
