Experiments designed to determine the variation in composition of solutions brought into equilibrium with samples of four different soils at widely different electrolyte concentrations are described in detail. The ratio law relationship between the potassium and calcium ion concentration( a K /a Ca= constant )is found to be strictly obeyed only in soils of low potassium status. Variations observed in soils which have received large dressings of potassium fertilizer are attributed to an exchange reaction by which the amount of potassium in readily exchangeable form is increased as the electrolyte concentration is raised.
