THE weathering of rock fragments and minerals has been understood in a general way for a long time, but many of the details are less clear. The purpose of this investigation was to study in more detail the rates of weathering of the plagioclase feldspars and to investigate some soil samples for the amount and kind of plagioclase present. Petrographic observations regarding the chemical stability of the various members of the plagioclase series have been reported in numerous publications. S. Goldich (2) has summarized the various reports and concludes that the feldspars could be listed in order of increasing stability as follows:
