THE Ferruginous Humic Latosols of the Hawaiian Islands are a group of soils having in their profiles a horizon containing a high concentration of heavy minerals (7) .' The concentration of heavy minerals in this horizon is in sufficient quantity to produce an apparent specific gravity of soil varying from 2.5 to 3.0. This group of soils is developed by soil forming processes which lead to the development of a "laterite crust" in other tropical areas (4, 5). In certain areas on the Islands of Kauai and Molokai a hard crust has been exposed at the surface by erosion but this hard surface is not of the hardness of the "laterite crusts" described by Pendleton (5) or Mohr (4). This material, while compacted into a hard surface, is no,t cemented and •when loosened the fragments will crush with ease.
