E soils'now known as Brown Podzolic received ' official recognition in the United States as a zonal great soil group in 1938, "because of their rather wide geographic distribution and because they were apparently in equilibrium with their environment" (z). A considerable portion of the area occupied by these soils in New England has been surveyed and it is possible to describe in some detail the morphological characteristics of these soils. The purpose of this report is (a) to describe the morphological, features that characterize the Brown Podzolic soils of New England, (b) to describe how they differ from the Podzols that border them toward the north and the Gray-Brown Podzolic soils that border them toward the south and west, and (c) to delineate the zone in which these soils predominate in New England.
