THE chemical data on the soil samples collected from the representative potato-producing areas in Alabama, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia, as outlined in Part I of this series, are presented in this paper. The chemical analyses reported here were made on the air-dry soil samples passing the 2-mm sieve. The methods of chemical analysis used were those recommended by the committee which was appointed for the purpose of working out the details of the different analytical methods to be followed by the cooperating states so that the results obtained by the different laboratories may be comparable. Inasmuch as some of these methods have been fully described only in the mimeographed report (9) prepared by the committee, a brief description of the procedures recommended by the committee, and such deviations from these procedures as were followed by some of the cooperating states, are given briefly below.
