TN STUDYING the soils of the forested areas of •*• the eastern half of the United States, it is seen that changes take place, from north to south, not only in forest composition but also in the nature of the humus layers and profilation of the mineral soils. The greatest changes occur in the mor areas, which occupy vastly more territory than mull areas. The depth of the unincorporated humus layer decreases, generally, from north to south, and, although there is no definite correlation between acidity and depth of humus layer, acidity decreases towards the south, also.
