The Committee in charge of the organization of the Soil Science Society of America had under consideration last year the relation between the now existing American Section of the International Society of Soil Science and the Soil Science Society of America. The Committee felt, however, that, in order not to complicate the problems involved in the organization of this Society, it would be better to leave this matter for future consideration. Since the . S.S.S.A. is now organized, the American members of the I.S.S.S. are called upon to express their opinion as to the best manner of establishing the relationship between this Society and the membership of the I.S.S.S. residing in this country. With this in view, Dr. Kelley, President of the American Section of the I.S.S.S. appointed a Committee consisting of Dr. A. G. McCall, Dr. M. F. Morgan and Dr. S. A. Waksman, to work out a suitable plan agreeable to the membership of the Section, this plan to be submitted next November at the Chicago meeting of the S.S.S.A. This Committee has worked out a tentative plan which has been submitted to a number of members of the American Section of the I.S.S.S. and which has received the majority vote above several other plans. This plan has now been modified and is being submitted to the whole American membership of the I.S.S.S. for their approval. This plan is as follows: That the Soil Science Society of America be petitioned to take charge of the affairs of the American membership of the I.S.S.S.; that the President of the Soil Science Society of America be empowered to appoint a special committee of six, composed of members of the I.S.S.S., to give consideration to matters involved in the relationships with the International Organization, to be designated as the I.S.S.S. Committee. Its members shall serve for five years, from one International Congress to the next. The new Committee should be appointed in the fall preceding the Congress, but shall take office at the end of the next Congress. Each commission of the International Society should be represented by one member of this committee and the appointement of the member should take place upon the recommendation of the Chairman of the appropriate Section of the S.S.S.A. This Committee shall elect a seventh member as its chairman. This chairman shall act as the National Representative of the International Society. The Treasurer of the S.S.S.A. (who is also Treasurer of the American Society of Agronomy) shall be asked to conduct business affairs incident to collection and transmittal of dues, distribution of announcements, etc. The office of Assistant Treasurer to be abolished. We, therefore, recommend that the American Section of the International Society of Soil Science be discontinued as a separate body and that the Soil Science Society of America be petitioned to adopt an additional by-law approving this plan.
