Numerous soil scientists in the United States and abroad agree that the distribution of the organic matter and nitrogen in the soil must be closely related to climatic conditions. This agreement is not, however, the result of specific mathematical proof. The belief that such proof is possible is the contention of the following paper. In consequence of a single assumption, an equation for this relation has been theoretically developed. A careful study of numerous nitrogen analyses as correlated with the recorded climatic conditions of their respective localities led to its verification by these data and proved that the total nitrogen content of the soil shows a mathmatical relation to the mean annual temperature.
