Soil chemists are often criticized because they do not agree upon which is the best method for determining soil acidity. Much of the confusion resulting from a consideration of the large number of methods proposed for the determination of soil acidity and lime requirement has been brought about through a lack of appreciation of what is being tested for in any given method* If all these methods were measuring the sano thing, just as we have several methods for determining potassium* it might still be difficult to select the best, but with the various methods dependant upon different phases of the phenomena of soil reaction, the whole situation has become highly confusing* It is with the hope of clarifying this condition that the present discussion is being taken up»
