The extensive field study of soil acidity in connection with the Soil Survey has in the past been limited very largely to litmus paper tests. The results in the main have been unsatisfactory. It is only within the last two years that tests have been devised, which are satisfactory mechanically, and hence could be used in an extensive way. The Comber'method, known by various names, called sometimes the Thiocyanate Test, has proved to fulfill the mechanical requirements and to be very useful. Factors e f fec t ing its utilization have been studied by various members of the Soils Department, Ohio State University, and the Chemistry Department, Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station. These observations are here summarized.
