Root‐knot nematodes ( Meloidogyne spp.) can significantly reduce seed yield in soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Identification of soybean germplasm with unique genes for resistance to root‐knot nematodes would allow development of cultivars with high levels of resistance. The objective of this study was to identify additional sources of resistance to root‐knot nematodes. We evaluated 608 recently imported soybean PIs from the southern provinces of the People's Republic of China for resistance to M. incognita (MI) and M. arenaria (MA). After three sequential levels of greenhouse screening, seven resistant PIs were identified for MI and seven for MA. In a fourth screening level to determine their level of resistance, PI 594753A and PI 594775A had MI gall resistance equal to the highly resistant check PI 96354. Three other PIs had more galls than PI 96354, but produced fewer galls than ‘Haskell’, the resistant check. However, the numbers of MI eggs produced on PI 594753A and PI 594775A were equal to the highly susceptible ‘Bossier’. The MA screening identified PI 594427C and PI 594403 with the same number of galls as the resistant check Haskell, but they had more galls than the highly resistant PI 200538. The number of MA eggs produced by PI 594427C was equal to the highly resistant check PI 200538, and PI 594403 produced fewer eggs per plant than PI 200538. These new sources of MA resistance may possess previously unidentified genes.
