The inheritance of resistance in soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] to the peanut root‐knot nematode [ Meloidogyne arenaria (Neal) Chitwood; Ma] was determined using crosses of a susceptible genotype, ‘CNS’, with three resistant genotypes, ‘Jackson’, PI200538, and PI230977. For each cross, F 1 , F 2 , and/or F 3 populations were screened in a greenhouse for resistance to gall formation by counting individual galls on the roots of plants inoculated with eggs of Ma Race 2. The range and continuous pattern of each F 2 and/or F 3 distribution indicated that resistance to gall formation was quantitatively inherited. Variance component heritability estimates for the three crosses ranged from 0.48 to 0.62 on a plot basis and 0.74 to 0.83 on a mean basis. The correlation between gall number on F~ plants and mean gall number on F 3 progeny ranged from 0.29 to 0.44 for CNS × Jackson and PI200538 × CNS. The genetic uniqueness of resistance genes was determined for crosses of Jackson × PI200538 and PI200538 × PI230977. Susceptible genotypes in F~ and F~ populations and significant differences ( P < 0.05) among F 3 families from each cross indicated that PI200538 has genes for resistance to Ma that are not the same as Ma resistance genes in Jackson and PI230977. This information will enable breeders to efficiently use PI200538 and PI230977 to improve the level of resistance to Ma in soybean cultivars.
