The Pennisetum glaucum germplasm line ICML22 (PI572474), released in 1992, was derived via selfing and head-to-row selection for 5 generations in accession IP2696 from Chad in a downy mildew (Sclerospora graminicola) nursery at Patancheru. In trials conducted in 1982 and 1991 at sites in India having downy mildew, ICML22 exhibited a mean of 4.1% downy mildew incidence. However, in trails at 2 sites in western Africa it was highly susceptible. ICML22 also had high levels of downy mildew resistance when inoculated with the 3 most aggressive isolates from India. The absence of differential levels of resistance with respect to pathogen population, inoculum concentration or age at inoculation suggests that ICML22 has a broad genetic base for resistance to Indian populations of downy mildew. ICML22 is photoperiod-insensitive, early maturing (64-68 days), short (85-100 cm) and profusely tillering (3-6 reproductive tillers per plant). It is a restorer when crossed to 5141A (A1 cytoplasm)
