Resistance to greenbug [ Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)] Biotype G (GBG) has recently been identified in wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.). Prior to this discovery, five sources of resistance to greenbug Biotypes B, C, and E were documented. Resistance in these five sources is controlled by five different genes ( gbl, Gb2, Gb3, Gb4, and Gb5 ). The objectives of this study were to characterize the virulence of Biotypes G and H on sources of greenbug resistance in wheat, determine the inheritance of GBG resistance in GRS 1201 (a GBG‐resistant winter wheat), and determine whether the GBG resistance gene is different from other reported resistance genes. A combination of bioassays and previously reported data was used to characterize and summarize the virulence patterns of Biotypes B, C, E, F, G, H, and I on all known sources of greenbug resistance in wheat. ‘Largo’ ( Gb3 ) was the only germplasm resistant to Biotype H. Largo, CI 17959, and GRS 1201 were resistant to Biotype I. GRS 1201 was the only germplasm resistant to Biotype G. Segregation ratios of GBG resistance ratings of an F 2 population from a cross between GRS 1201 and ‘Tavern’ (GBG‐susceptible spring wheat) were analyzed to determine inheritance. GBG resistance in GRS 1201 is inherited as a single dominant gene, which is different from previously reported resistance genes. C‐banding analysis identified GRS 1201 as being a 1AL.1RS wheat‐rye translocation line. The C‐banding of the 1RS arm in GRS 1201 is identical to the 1RS arm present in ‘Amigo’ ( Gb2 ). The gene symbol Gb6 has been assigned to the greenbug resistance gene in GRS 1201.
