SORGHUM [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] germplasm lines with resistance to the sorghum midge [Contarinia sorghicola (Coq.)], Tift MR9110, Tift MR9115, and Tift MR9120 (Reg. no. GP-371 to GP-373; PI564512 to PI564514) were cooperatively developed and released in March 1992 by the USDAARS and the University of Georgia, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA. A sorghum midge resistant plant was selected in the F4 generation of a Redbine 60 (three-dwarf midge susceptible) x PI383856 (tall short-day sensitive and midge resistant) cross. This midge resistant selection was evaluated and selected for resistant plants during three succeeding self-pollinated generations (F7). A 2.29 m tall, highly midge-resistant (rating of 1 on 1-9 scale where 1 is resistant) F7 plant was selected and crossed to Tx2782, the pedigree being Tx2782//Redbine 60/ PI383856. The F, progeny of this cross contained 8 highly resistant plants (rating of 1) and a number of selfed plants of Tx2782 (rating of 2). Homozygous midge resistant plants were selected within the F4 progeny of the highly resistant plants and selfed for four additional generations. The F4-derived F8 selections were designated Tift MR9110, Tift MR9115, and Tift MR9120. Midge damage ratings were greater than 4.0 on the susceptible check, BTx623, during the entire breeding and selection program. Tift MR9110, Tift MR9115, and Tift MR9120 are resistant to the sorghum midge (Table 1). All lines have white seed with a pigmented testa, purple plant color, reddish brown glumes, no awns and maintain sterility of the A, cytoplasm in crosses with ATx623. Tift MR9110 is 1.1 m tall with a semi-compact panicle. Tift MR9115 is 1.4 m tall and has a compact panicle. Tift MR9120 is 1.6 m tall and has an open panicle similar to Table 1. Damage ratings in Georgia on sorghum germplasm tested for sorghum midge resistance.
