Plant Materials Registered by Crop Science Incorporated into the National Plant Germplasm System

The Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) provides a voluntary registration program for crop cultivars, parental lines, elite germplasm, and genetic stocks. Since January 1987, plant materials registered by Crop Science have been incorporated into the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System. Seed samples are deposited in the National Seed Storage Laboratory and in appropriate working collections. These materials are available from the working collections in small quantities for research purposes. Information about the plant material, referred to as passport data, is documented by the Plant Introduction Office and Plant Introduction numbers are assigned. These data and evaluation data added later are in easily retrievable form in the national database—the Germplasm Resources Information Network. The type of information to be documented, the procedure and quantity of seed needed for the National Seed Storage Laboratory and the working collections, the description of genetic stocks, and the provision for handling the import of foreign materials for registration are discussed.
