The use of computers has eliminated most miscalculations during analysis; however, errors occurring during data collection and collating are still common. Hand recording data is labor intensive, time consuming, and a potential source of errors. Transcriptional mistakes can also occur during manual keyboard entry of data for computer analysis. Time spent on finding and correcting these errors further contribute to labor cost and delays in analysis. To minimize errors in a small‐grain variety performance testing program, a computerized weighing system for the collection of agronomic data was developed using a Radio Shack TRSS0 Model 100 portable computer. Plot identification is facilitated with preprinted self‐adhesive barcode labels scanned with a hand wand connected to the Model 100. Sample weights measured on a digital balance are electronically transmitted to the Model 100 for collection and temporary storage. Data is permanently stored on a microfloppy diskette, and a printed hard copy can be obtained from a printer. Battery operation of the entire system allows portability and flexibility between field and laboratory. Data can be easily retrieved and transferred to either a mainframe or desktop PC computer for analysis.
