The difficulty of obtaining reliable seed yields from birdsfoot trefoil ( Lotus corniculatus L.) has limited its use as a forage. Several growth retardants reported to increase seed production in other species were evaluated on birdsfoot trefoil in the greenhouse. Four field experiments were conducted during 1984 and 1985 to evaluate the effects of the two most promising growth retardants, daminozide [butanedioic acid mono (2,2‐dimethylhydrazide)] and mepiquat chloride (l,l‐dimethyl‐piperidinium chloride), on reproductive characteristics of two genotypes and two cultivurs of birdsfoot trefoil. These growth retardants affected neither the yield ratio of reproductive to total dry matter production nor seed yield in any of the four experiments.
