Previous investigations with msp msp male‐sterile soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] have indicated that temperature affects the expression of sterility. It is not known whether this effect is dependent on the day or night temperature or the diurnal variation between the two. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of decreasing night temperature on the expression of male sterility in the msp msp genotype. Partial malesterile ( msp msp ) and fertile sibs ( Msp _) were grown in growth chambers with the following day/night temperature regimes: 24/24,24/21,24/18, and 24/15 °C. Increased fertility was found to occur concomitant with decreasing night temperatures for the male‐sterile genotype ( msp msp ). These data indicate an optimum temperature regime for expression of male sterility dependent upon night temperature.
