A diallel of six corn ( Zea mays L.) inbred lines was grown in five diverse environments to investigate the feasibility of using the relationship betwen total leaf number and leaf stage at tassel initiation to predict the occurence of tassel initiation. A single quadratic regression line accounted for 96% of the variation in leaf stage at tassel initiation; however, a better fit was obtained when individual linear regression lines were calculated for each entry. On the basis of individual regression lines, data from four of the environments were used to predict the leaf stage at tassel initiation in the fifth environment. The mean absolute value of the residuals from these gressions was less than one‐half a leaf stage.
