Inheritance of Feather Leaf and Plantain Leaf Characters in Sugarbeet 1

F 1 crosses and F 2 progenies of normal ✕ abnormal leaf types were made and studied in the greenhouse to determine the inheritance of two foliar characters in sugarbeet, Beta vulgaris L. Plantain leaf ( Pl 2 ) a parallel veined lamina character in sugarbeet, was inherited as a simple dominant gene. This character phenotypically resembles another plantain character observed several years ago; however, the latter was governed by a single recessive gene. A feather leaf ( ft ) character was found to be controlled by a single recessive gene. Neither plantain leaf nor feather leaf genes were linked with genetic factors in the prominent Y‐R‐B linkage group in sugarbeet. Since these mutant characters have little or no detrimental effects on plant growth, the mutant plants could prove to be very useful marker stock for genetic and breeding experiments with sugarbeet.
