Seven soft red winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) cultivars were grown to study the influence of soil pH on morphological traits and to determine the specific leaf weight of flag leaves. Cultivars were grown in the field at two surface soil pH levels (5.2 and 6.1). Measurements of flag leaves from primary stems were recorded at the milk and dough stages. Low soil pH significantly reduced dry weight, flag leaf area, and grain yield. Linear regression equations of leaf area vs. leaf weight accounted for approximately 94 and 92% of variation at pH 6.1 and 5.2, respectively. Dry weight of flag leaves could be used to rank cultivars for flag leaf area. Leaf area was correlated with dry weight (r = 0.98**, significant at the 0.01 level.). Grain growth was related to soil pH but was not related to flag leaf area. The stage of growth did not affect leaf weight:rarea relationships.
