A method for identifying inbred lines containing dominant alleles affecting a quantitative trait, which are not already present in an elite single cross, was developed. If the elite single cross is designated P 1 ✕ P 2 and the lines to be tested P w , the expression μG = [(P 1 ✕ P w ) + (P 2 ✕ P w ) − P 1 − P 2 − P w − (P 1 ✕ P 2 )]/4 is an estimate of the relative number of loci in P w which contain favorable alleles not present in P 1 or P 2 . Results from applying the method to a set of corn ( Zea mays L.) grain yield data suggest the method may be useful in applied breeding programs.
