Covariances of relatives stemming from self‐fertilization of initially noninbred parents are formulated for a quantitative model with any number of alleles and loci with additive and dominance effects (no epistasis). The results are phrased in terms of five quadratic genetic components whose coefficients are given by descent measures. To estimate the components with any reliability or to test for adequacy of various models, relatives in the first few generations of selfing must be utilized. With more than four generations of selfing, the variances and Covariances are essentially a function of a single composite which represents the variance among homozygous individuals. If this is actually the variance desired, then five or more generations of selfing are sufficient.
