Hybrids between two fertile accessions of tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb., (PI 234906, from Switzerland, and PI 174209, from Turkey) were highly sterile, with indehiscent anthers and negligible seed set (<0.01%). Both parents and the hybrids had 2n = 6x = 42 chromosomes, without gross karyotypic variation or appreciable meiotic irregularity. The parents differed in number of secondary constrictions (8 in PI 174209 and 10 in PI 234906), indicating potential for cryptic structural hybridity in the F 1 hybrids. Although the frequency was low, the hybrids also had signficantly more univalents per cell than their parents (0.72 vs. 0.31 and 0.14). Since meiotic irregularities did not seem to account for the hybrid sterility, we believe it may be under genic, probably sporophytic, control.
