A greenhouse seedling test to determine the reaction of sorghum [ Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] to maize dwarf virus strain A was compared with results of field tests of mechanically inoculated and naturally infected plants. Greenhouse tests were as accurate as field tests in identifying resistant and susceptible lines. Greenhouse seedling tests were more effective in identifying the type of susceptible reactions—temperature dependent red‐leaf necrosis or temperature independent red‐stripe.
