Effects of calcium and phosphate on the yield of Geraldton subclover ( Trifolium subterraneum L.) were studied. Optimum combinations of the nutrients were determined from isoprobs derived from a response surface function. The maximum yield can be attained at 2,318 ppm and 206 ppm of Ca and P, respectively. In searching for optimum combinations, standard errors and variance inflation factors were suggested to be useful criteria for designing follow‐up experiments if the initial experiment fails to produce all needed information. Isoprobs were useful visual diagnostic tools for determining the reliability of the prediction.
