Eleven cultivars of durum wheat ( Triticum turgidum L.) were grown under rainfed and irrigated conditions in order to determine if differences in rate of grain filling and duration exist and to study their relationships with grain weight. A cubic polynomial was used to describe the relationship between grain weight and time from anthesis. Rate and duration of grain filling were obtained from the fitted curve. Cultivars differed significantly in rate of grain filling, duration of grain filling, and grain weight. Rate and duration of grain filling were positively associated with final grain weight. There appeared to be little genetic association between rate of grain filling and duration of grain filling. Results suggested that it should be possible to simultaneously improve rate of grain filling and grain weight without lengthening duration of grain filling.
