The genetics of resistance to phytophthora rot (caused by Phytophthora megasperma Drechs. var. sojae Hildeb.) was studied in the soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivar PI 171442. PI 171442 is the donor of one of the genes for resistance in the cultivar ‘Tracy,’ and is part of a uniform set of soybean differentials used to identify races of the disease‐inducing organism. The results indicate that the dominant gene found in PI 171442 occupies a locus different from Rps 1 and Rps 2 , and that both PI 171442 and PI 86972‐1 have the Rps 3 gene for resistance.
