Genetic male‐sterile stocks of 176 spring and 147 winter barleys ( Hordeum vulgare L.) are available for distribution. Stocks are in both two‐ and six‐rowed backgrounds and vary widely in heading date, plant morphology, and area of origin. A new permanent system of assigning genetic symbols to mutant genetic stocks is described. Three letters designate the character; a number, the locus; and one or more letters, the mutational event. These stocks are used for developing hybrid barley in routine breeding programs, development of recurrent selection populations, interspecific crossing, and in studies on the physiology of flowering and microspore formation.
