A Technicon Dickey‐john Near Infrared (NIR) Analyzer (lnfra Alyzer) was used to determine if NIR analyses could be used to study protein translocation in wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.). It was calibrated, using Kjeldahl protein values, for wheat head and vegetative protein. These calibrations were tested with samples from a field experiment involving different cultivars, different levels of N application, and time of application. Correlation coefficients (r) were calculated between Kjeldahl and NIR protein from head emergence to maturity. For wheat head protein, the overall r = +0.82 and for wheat vegetative protein, r =‐ +0.97. It was concluded that NIR analyses were sufficiently accurate to be utilized in wheat protein translocation studies.
