A Proposed Barley Karyotype Revision Based on C‐Band Chromosome Identification 1

Individual chromosomes of barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) were identified by C‐banding the primary trisomics for chromosomes 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the cultivar ‘Betze’. Karyotype analysis of C‐banded chromosomes indicated that chromosome 2 was the longest chromosome while chromosome 1 had the most median centromere. Chromosomes associated with linkage groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were similar to those described as 3, 2, 1, and 4, respectively, in the previous standard barley karyotype. A key to chromosome identification is presented and a revision of the barley karyotype is proposed so that the chromosomes described correspond to the numbering of the linkage groups as currently being used for barley. The reliability of C‐banding for barley chromosome identification is discussed.
