A diallel cross of nine inbred lines of corn ( Zea mays L.) was planted late and evaluated for response to leaffeeding by the fall armyworm [ Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)] under natural infestation in 1976 and 1977. In 1976, plants were evaluated after anthesis on a rating scale of 0 (resistant) to 9 (susceptible). In 1977, plants were rated about 5 weeks after planting on a scale of 1 (resistant) to 3 (susceptible) because of an extremely heavy, early infestation. Mean squares for general and specific combining ability were highly significant in 1976. In 1977, the mean square for general combining ability was highly significant, but the mean square for specific combining ability was not significant. The mean leaffeeding damage ratings for the resistant ✕ resistant, resisant ✕ susceptible, and susceptible ✕ susceptible crosses were, respectively, 5.48, 6.16, and 7.22 in 1976 and 1.50, 2.02, and 2.83 in 1977.
