Gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) was evaluated for pollination control in branched sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) male‐fertility restorer lines. A 50 ppm concentration of GA 3 , applied directly to the main head flower bud, reduced self‐fertility to 2.4, 3.0, and 3.8% of the checks. Self‐pollinated seed was obtained from secondary heads of treated plants. These results indicated that reciprocal full‐sib selection can be adapted to develop and improve sunflower breeding populations.
