The ribonuclease and phosphodiesterase enzyme activities of 18 lines of barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) were compared to their winter survival ratings. These lines, selected in Wyoming, were obtained from a composite cross derived from 18 original parents using male sterility. Enzyme analysis on the soluble extract from 4‐day seedlings showed, in general, that the rihonuclease activity in the hardiest phenotypes was depressed to a greater extent by 0.50 M KCI. These extracts contained the lowest amounts of an enzyme tentatively identified as ribonuclease L Usually the extracts of the hardiest phenotypes also contained the highest phosphodiesterase activity, as determined with thymidine 3′‐(p‐nitrophenyl) phosphate.
