Two maize ( Zea mays L.) breeding populations were evaluated for rootworm tolerance by use of the vertical‐pull technique. This technique should be an effective method for selection to reduce root lodging in populations under rootworm infestations. Variance component estimates for genotype‐environment interactions were small relative to genotypic variance. Error variance, however, was substantial in both populations. Expected gains from selection suggest that an optimum allocation of resources for evaluation trials would be three replications at one to two locations and three to five plants per plot.
