Twenty‐three genotypes of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench were screened with a leaf‐resistance porometer for stomatal sensitivity to water deficits. Plants were grown and tested in a controlled‐environment chamber, at solar levels of lighting and under warm, moist conditions. Plants were grown until the sixth leaf was fully expanded, at which time watering ceased. Measurements of leaf diffusive resistance of the sixth leaf of each plant, and soil water potential of each pot were taken several times daily during the subsequent drying period. The stomatal sensitivity to water stress of a genotype was then compared to that of a check genotype grown in the same pot. The 23 genotypes varied considerably in relative sensitivity to soil‐water potential.
