Vigor was measured on individual seeds of soybean ( Glycine max L. ‘Lee‐68’) by an isotopic method for determining total uptake, incorporation and leaching of 14 C‐leucine fed to the individual axes. Results were similar with 32 P, which reduced the time necessary for a determination because uptake of 32 P by the axis was measured without extracting the tissue. The isotopic and conductivity methods for determining leachates were compared. More sugars and amino acids were leached from deteriorated than from vigorous seeds, whether the components were derived from an endogenous source, (e.g., stored food reserves) or from the incubation medium.
