Blue panicgrass ( Panicum antidotale Retz.) selections from six cycles of recurrent selection for heavy and lightseed weight were evaluated to establish the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration rates of inflorescences and seed weight. Selections with light seed weight had lower apparent photosynthesis and higher dark‐respiration rates of inflorescences. Data suggest that differences in seed weight of plants grown from heavy and light‐seed weight can be attributed partly to availability of less assimilate for storage during development of seed of lightseed weight selections.
