A new systemic chemical, 1‐(4‐chlorophenoxy)‐3,3‐dimethyl‐1‐(1 H ‐1,2,4‐triazol‐l‐yl)‐2 butanone (BAY MEB 6447), controlled and possibly eradicated Ustilago striiformis (stripe smut) and Urocystis agropyri (flag smut) in infected plants of Poa pratensis ‘Merion’ after a single application to soil in the root zone. Effective dosages for complete control were 1 to 2 mg in 600 ml soil containing a single plant with 7 to 16 shoots. Plants cured of both smuts remained smut‐free for 16 weeks. Treated plants became darker green and apparently were only slightly affected by effective dosages of the chemical. BAY MEB 6447 is considered highly promising for control of stripe smut and flag smut in turf and in grasses grown for seed.
