Fertility restoration of male‐sterile cytoplasm was discovered in two inbred lines from the confectionery sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) variety, ‘Sundak’. Limited data suggested that two independent, complementary, dominant genes were required for restoration. Crosses of the two restorer lines with several different cytoplasmic male‐sterile lines produced F 1 hybrids that were resistant to rust and highly desirable agronomically.
