‘Hope’ wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) is known to be resistant to certain cultures of the powdery mildew fungus, Erysiphe graminis DC. f. sp. tritici Em. Marchal. We inoculated parental, F 2 , and F 3 populations from crosses of Hope with four lines near‐isogenic for Pm1 , Pm2 , Pm3a , and Pm4 , with three cultures of the powdery mildew fungus. Our data showed that Hope has a single, recessive gene pan: that conditions resistance to the fungus and that the gene is different from Pm1 , Pm2 , Pm3a , and Pm4 . The symbol Pm5 has been assigned to the Hope locus. The phenotype of pm5 is best expressed when the host is inoculated at the four to five leaf stage of growth. Reaction of Hope is characterized by marked chlorosis surrounding lesions.
