Solutions for growth equations that estimate dry matter from photosynthetic, respiratory, and photosynthetic area variables were tested by using field data for cotton ( G. hirsutum L. var. ‘Deltapine Smoothleaf’). The equations based on assumptions of exponential leaf area expansion and exponential extraction of light by leaves fitted the data test. A leaf area expansion function that depends upon morphogenetic variables should improve the fit.
