Two tritlcale (× Triticosecale Wittmack) populatlons, one with a high chromosomal chiasma frequency and high fertility level and the other with a low chiasma‐fertillty index, were selected from a bulk population of the cultivar ‘Rosner.’ Results indicated the lack of relationship between chlasma frequency and seed‐set upon in. breeding when selection was on the basis of a high chlasma‐fertility index. In contrast, a positive relationship was found to exist between these same two variables when selection was on the basis of a low chiasma‐fertility index. These results suggest that for early generation hybrids involving triticale amphiploids in which the chiasma‐fertility index is normally low, a response to simultaneons selection could be obtained. This would not, hold true, however, as the chlasma‐fertility index rose above some specific threshold.
