The weight of selfed alfalfa seeds ( Medicago sativa L.) in pods containing seeds produced by both self‐ and cross‐pollinations was compared with the weight of selfed seeds in pods containing only self‐pollinated seed. Selfed and crossed seeds were individually weighed, grown to the seedling stage, and classified for hypocotyl color. Recessive white‐flowered plants were used as females, so that crossed seeds could be identified by colored hypocotyls. The difference in weight of the selfed seed with and without crossed‐seed competition was nonsignificant. The difference between the weight of crossed and selfed seed was 7 to 10%.
