Gene expression was examined in haploid and hybrid progeny resulting from interspecific crosses of diploid Hordeum vulgare L. genetic marker stocks with diploid and tetraploid forms of H. bulbosum L. The expression of marker genes on all vulgare chromosomes occurred in the haploid progeny, an observation consistent with the concept that the haploids contain only vulgare chromosomes and that bulbosum chromosomes are selectively eliminated. However, the recessive genes of H. vulgare were masked in diploid and triploid hybrids by H. bulbosum genes, which is indicative of the occurrence of interallelic interactions and genome homology between the species. Gene interaction and expression in interspecific and intergeneric hybrids in relation to alien gene or chromosome transfers is discussed.
