A modified dye‐binding (MDB) method of protein analysis was adapted for fast analysis of alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) herbage samples. Results from the MDB method and the micro‐Kjeldahl (Kj) method of protein analysis were highly correlated (r=0.96); the relationship was linear over the range of protein values expected of alfalfa herbage. The MDB method was satisfactory for detecting high‐ or low‐protein alfalfa samples and for predicting the corresponding micro‐Kj protein values from the equation, Kj = 2.90 + 0.389 (MDB). The coefficient of variation for MDB was less than 2%; MDB was equally, or more, precise than micro‐Kj.
