Fourteen characters were studied in a 5 by 5 diallel cross among varieties of spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.). The characters consisted of yield components, certain morphological structures above the flag leaf nodes, and three developmental stages. Factor analysis was used to analyze the relationship between these characters. This analysis indicated that the factor concerned with flag leaf area and duration was the most important. Characters that determined the nature of the “sink” were divided among three factors. The components of yield formed part of Factors 3 and 4. Factor analysis clarified the relationship between correlated characters in the dependence structure.
