Chromosome counts, pollen stainability, and seed‐setting ability are presented for 10 new Hemarthria altissima (Poir.) Stapf et C. E. Hubb accessions from Africa and one native Hemarthria sp . from Argentina. Root tip smears confirmed that the basic chromosome number of this genus is x = 9. Nine of the introductions are diploid, 2n = 18, and two are tetraploid, 2n = 36. Pollen stainability and seed set indicate that all 11 introductions may be included in an intrageneric breeding program.
